Hey, it’s hot! It’s Global Warming Alert!
Have you ever notice that we are feeling warmer than
ever? Perhaps you may wonder what is really happening
to our Earth. Don’t close this tab, scroll down
and flip around the page, you may find the answer to
your question…
Have you heard of the term ‘global warming’?
Maybe you will think that it’s not relevant to
your life. Or you may say: “I don’t care
what it meant, as long as it won’t bother with
my daily life!” or you may say: “I don’t
care what is really happening to my surroundings, as
long as I can enjoy my life happily!”
If you have the same thoughts, SIT BACK and THINK AGAIN…
Consider the following…
| |
•
How long can you stand under the hot sun while waiting
for the public transport? |
| |
•
Will you get bored eating the same vegetables and
fruits for the entire month? |
| |
•
If you have lung problems, how long can you stand
walking on the street? |
| |
•
Your children can get sick easily nowadays, what
will you do for them? |
Now,
let’s take a closer look at Global Warming.
Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual
increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere
and its oceans, a change that is believed to be permanently
changing the Earth’s climate.
The scientific consensus on climatic changes related
to global warming is that the average temperature of
the Earth has risen between 0.4 and 0.8 °C over
the past 100 years.
The primary sources of global warming that occurred
for the past 50 years are believed to come from the
following:
| |
•
Increased volumes of greenhouse gases emission (e.g.
carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide etc.) |
| |
•
Used of fossil fuels |
| |
•
Land clearing |
| |
•
Used of pesticides |
| |
•
And other human activities |
Scientists
from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate carrying
out global warming research have recently predicted
that average global temperatures could increase between
1.4 and 5.8 °C by the year 2100. Changes resulting
from global warming may include rising sea levels due
to the melting of the polar ice caps, as well as an
increase in occurrence and severity of storms and other
severe weather events.
Effects of Global
Warming
So, now you may have a general idea of what is global
warming. But, do you know how serious will that be?
Let’s
look at the following…
| |
•
Extreme weather, which means that you may feel warmer
or colder in certain periods. The weather has become
unpredictable! |
| |
•
Disappearance of glacier that could link to flash
floods, landslides, glacier lake overflow and many
more. |
| |
•
Increased maintenance costs for roads, airport runways,
railway lines and pipelines as they may subject
to greater temperature variation. |
| |
•
Longer draught |
| |
•
Water scarcity |
| |
•
Spread of infectious diseases e.g. dengue fever |
| |
•
The list goes on… |
So,
save energy, save costs and save our future and
save life! |
